MAP OF BALLARAT, VICTORIA
A Brief Look At Ballarat, Victoria
Ballarat is an Australian city of just over 100,000 permanent residents located in the interior of Victoria, Australia. This places the location square in the Central Highlands. Sizable for an inland city, Ballarat has a very interesting history that involves a gold rush that lasted for decades, beautiful natural scenery, and amazing history that causes this area to stick out even by Aussie standards.
The influence of those decades long gold rushes can be seen today from the importance of gold in the local history museums to the large amount of it still clearly visible in the city’s rich and impressive architecture. Then there’s the fact that Ballarat is the home of the Eureka Rebellion, the only armed revolt in the history of Australia.
The history of this event is amazing and still draws tourists in today. The Eureka Flag, once the rallying symbol of armed rebellion, has since been seen as a truly important piece of progress for Australia and as a symbol of the country’s early movements towards a better government. In fact, the compromises made to end the rebellion as the beginning of independent democracy in Australia.
Add in a truly wonderful outdoor museum dedicated to the role of gold mining in the area and it’s easy to see how Ballarat manages to bring in 2.2 million visitors a year. While tourism is important, it is only 15% of the local economy.
Ballarat’s geography has plenty going for it, as well. Instead of being in the mountains common with the Great Dividing range, this city nestles snugly in the rolling hills and plains around it. Also known as the Central Highlands.
Originally founded in 1837 and then riding the 1850s gold rush to becoming a full fledged city less than two decades later, this area has come a long way. There are wildlife parks, amazing museums, and plenty of beautiful highland country in the surrounding areas that keep this wonderful interior city as important and relevant as it has ever been.
