MAP OF ADELAIDE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Facts About About Adelaide, South Australia
The capital city of South Australia is Adelaide and it has been ranked as being the fifth most populated city in Australia. As of June 2017, it had an estimated population of 1,333,927 residents. Adelaide is known as the home of the majority of Southern Australia’s population since it houses over 75 percent of them.
Adelaide is located on the Adelaide Plains where it sits between the low-lying ranges of Mount Lofty and the Gulf St Vincent, on the northern side of the Fleurieu Peninsula. Adelaide is approximately 12 miles or 20 km from the foothills to the coast and 58 miles to 65 miles or 94 km to 104 km away from the northern end of Gawler until the south end at Sellicks Beach.
In 1836, the city was founded and named after Queen Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen who was the wife of King William the IV. The towns location was chosen and designed by Colonel William Light since it was closest to River Torrens, however, the area was first inhabited by Karuna people. Adelaide was originally founded and shaped by both wealth and prosperity until World War II and had been until then a city which didn’t have a convict history.
In earlier times, Adelaide was noted for civil liberties, its commitment to political progress and religious freedom and was widely known as the City of Churches. The city’s commercial center and its seat of government as well as other institutions for finance and government are all located in Adelaide. In addition, most of these buildings can be found on Adelaide’s cultural boulevard as well as in other districts of the bustling metro.
We can see that Adelaide is filled with a rich cultural history. The city of Adelaide has also been ranked for having a higher quality of life as well as being one of the most habitable cities within Australia.
