MAP OF ROCKHAMPTON, QUEENSLAND
About Rockhampton, Queensland
The Fitzroy River was discovered in 1853 by two men seeking grazing territory in a region now well known for its beef production. The area was named Rockhampton in 1858 and was originally a town. Today, the city is thriving and it attracts tourists who want to see the Capricorn Coast and Great Keppel Island among other points of interest.
As one of the oldest cities in Queensland, Northern Australia it has streets that are laid out with wide boulevards a lot like Melbourne. The region attracted settlers in the 1800s for two reasons. There was plenty of fertile land to raise cattle on and there was gold to be found.
The first North Australian gold rush happened in 1859 and led to the city receiving the moniker of the City of Three Ss. They stood for sin, sweat, and sorrow. The gold rushes contributed to the Victorian buildings that were built in most of the city.
Today the city is a gateway for tourists who also want to explore Mount Archer National Park. The city features a few statues of bulls to honor its beef production history. Rockhampton Heritage Village with recreated woodsheds and cottages also reflects on the city history. The art gallery in the city is one of the most extensive in Australia.
Visitors and locals make constant use of the Rockhampton Airport which services the region. Students attend Central Queensland University and there are several primary and secondary schools.
The weather is considered subtropical and lies in the Tropic of Capricorn. It is too far north to get any benefit from the ocean cold fronts and is too far south to get monsoons. It is still an industrial and agricultural city of significance in the North. Famous Rockhampton residents include one of the greatest tennis players of all time, Rod Laver.
