About Albany, Western Australia
Albany is a port city in the Southern part of Western Australia. It is located 419 km south- east of Perth, the state capital. This city is surrounded by tall forests, green seas, and national parks and it also offers the tourists plenty of natural adventures like whale-watching, fishing, and diving. Before the settlement of the Europeans, this area was inhabited by the Noongar people belonging to the Minang Aboriginal language group.
Albany’s city center is situated between the Mount Melville and the Mount Clarence hills. It is surrounded by many beaches, with Middleton Beach being the closest. Other popular beaches are Muttonbird Island and Frenchman Bay.
The city enjoys a Mediterranean climate with warm and dry summers, wet and mild winters, and the springs and autumns are pleasant. The summers are usually very hot but the cool ocean breeze provides relief during the nights. Annually, it has 44.8 clear days. February is the driest month of the year whereas July being the wettest month.
Albana is the sixth most populated place of the State with an urban population of more than 33,145, according to the Census in 2016.
The chief industries of the city include tourism, timber, fishing, and agriculture. Whaling was a main source of income as well as employment for its local population during the period from 1952 to 1978.
Albana has several historical sites such as the Albany Convict Gaol, Museum, The Princess Royal Fortress (called as the Forts), and the Patrick Taylor Cottage, an old dwelling. The city has a lot of historical significance. The natural sights include the ‘Gap’ and the ‘Natural Bridge’. The beaches have white sand. It is also closely located to the two mountain ranges, the Stirling Ranges and the Porongurups.
