About Mackay, Queensland

Mackay is a tropical city in the Mackay region of Queensland, Australia. It is situated about 970 kilometers to the north of Brisbane. The location of this region is a little controversial, with people referring to it as either North Queensland or Central Queensland. The city is named after Captain John Mackay. As the city produces more than one-third of the country’s cane sugar, it is called the sugar capital of Australia.

The city enjoys a humid subtropical climate. The average maximum temperature ranges from 23 to 30- degrees Celcius while the minimum temperature ranges are between 11 to 23-degree Celcius. The winters are dry and sunny. Frost is very rare and it has almost 110.0 clear days in a year. Springs are dry but more humid and hotter than winter. There may be occasional thunderstorms. Monsoons usually begin in December and remain till March or April. During the monsoon season, there is high humidity, warm nights, and daily rainfall.

The major industries of Mackay include sugar, mining, tourism, marine, and retail. It has three major shopping centers and Caneland Central, being the largest. It is closely located to the Great Barrier Reef and has many rainforests that attract several visitors.

The city has 31 beaches. The patrolled Harbor Beach is the most popular one and Far and Town beaches are the closest. In the northern part of the city, you can find the other popular beaches such as Blacks Beach, Dolphin Heads, and others collectively called the Northern Beaches. Several islands are well-known for the blue waters. St Bees Island is a popular fishing spot while Brampton Island is an ideal destination for the resorts.

The annual Mackay Festival Arts are held in the month of July. It is the largest regional art festival organized in Queensland. It features live jazz, wine tasting session, art exhibitions, dance performances, and stand-up routines.
